Modern Japanese Novelists explores the remarkable flowering of literature Japan has seen in the twentieth century. Writers of Japan's modern era have both borrowed—and often improved upon—Western techniques of writing fiction and turned for inspiration to their rich heritage of indigenous literary traditions. Thus the scope of this biographical dictionary extends beyond the Western definition of "novelist" to include authors of works in the autobiographical "I-Novel" tradition and some of the most eminent practitioners of short fiction.
