Focusing on the assessment of speaking abilities, this research study explores how topic selection impacts the oral performance of Vietnamese faculty in English. It investigates the effectiveness of various oral assessment instruments and identifies the relevance of general versus academic field-specific topics. The findings reveal no significant difference in performance between the two types of topics, suggesting important implications for language testing and highlighting the training needs of faculty in spoken English for academic settings.
