Postcolonial theory

Postcolonial literature, previously known as Commonwealth literature and the New or World literatures in English, has become a significant area of study in university classrooms globally, prompting a wealth of critical analysis. This selected and annotated bibliography serves as an essential research aid for students and educators navigating the complexities of postcolonial studies. With over 360 entries, the bibliography is organized chronologically and by regional origin, showcasing the diverse arguments and the extensive historical and global dimensions of the theoretical discourse that began in the 19th-century British colonies. By the late 1980s, this discourse had evolved into a substantial challenge to traditional English Studies. Additionally, two articles provide insights into the earlier transition from Commonwealth literature studies to postcolonial literature studies and the subsequent evolution of postcolonial theory.
