The name DGGTB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie; German Society for the History and Theory of Biology) reflects both recent history and German tradition. Established in 1991, following German reunification, it is a relatively recent addition to a series of German scientific societies that began with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Medizin und der Naturwissenschaften, founded in 1910 by Karl Sudhoff. He aimed to create a German-speaking core of historians in specific disciplines, although he was open to merging with an international society. The founding of DGGTB was shaped by specific historical circumstances, emphasizing the importance of the history and philosophy of biology. The Society is dedicated to making these studies accessible to a broader audience through its Jahrbuch für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie. Additionally, the Verhandlungen zur Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie serves as a traditional platform for publishing papers from the Society's annual meetings. In 2005, the Jahrbuch was renamed Annals of the History and Philosophy of Biology, reflecting the Society's commitment to internationalism and the comparative study of biology within historical and philosophical contexts.
