Angkor literally means "city" and here, close to the shores of Cambodia's Great Lake, the ancient Khmer kings built their successive capitals and ruled over the greatest empire Southeast Asia has ever seen. Against all odds, the temples and palaces survive many intact, some reclaimed by Nature. To see them is to be transported; to be left spellbound. They remain a spectacular testament not only to the achievements of those who built them, but to all mankind.
