After the murder of a white man in Jim Crow Mississippi, two black sisters flee to different parts of the country, haunted by the secrets they left behind. In the summer of 1964, as three men are murdered for aiding black citizens in securing voting rights, twenty-one-year-old Violet Richards finds herself in dire straits. After a brutal attack, she kills her assailant, but in Jackson, Mississippi, her skin color means she cannot escape Jim Crow justice. To evade capture, she runs with the help of her white boyfriend, hiding in the small town of Chillicothe, Georgia, where danger lurks closer than she realizes. Meanwhile, her older sister Marigold dreams of law school and works for the Mississippi Summer Project, advocating for black voting rights. However, she faces her own crisis: she is pregnant and unmarried. When police come looking for Violet, Marigold decides to flee Jackson as well, searching for a better life free from segregation. Unbeknownst to them, a man with dark secrets is on their trail, driven by a disturbing motive known only to him. Two sisters on the run—one from the law and the other from societal shame—must confront the consequences of their choices.
