The development of the MiG-31, a two-seat interceptor designed for the vast regions of Siberia and the Soviet Far East, began in 1965 alongside the MiG-25 program. With its first flight on September 16, 1975, and operational capability achieved in 1980, the MiG-31, initially known as Super Foxbat, underwent significant upgrades, including in-flight refueling in 1989 and enhanced avionics with the MiG-31B model in 1990. These advancements ensured the aircraft remained a formidable presence in aerial defense.
