This text introduces the student to the field of forestry resource economics from the author's broad perspective--the product of over 40 years of working, teaching, and researching in the field. Arranged so that the instructor may easily design a course focusing on a selection of narrow topics, the book is carefully and clearly written for students seeking a general introduction. It presents forestry economics as more than simply money matters. The text introduces and treats the topic from the perspective that resources are the result and the means of human betterment, and it discusses the role that people play in the development and use of these resources. Problem solving by the student is emphasized early and reinforced throughout the text. Emphasis is given to key topics such as the interdependence of nations, world forestry, nontimber forestry, and consumer economics, and the difficult topics of taxation and social planning are carefully clarified.
