Education and training systems in the 1990s face major challenges. This report presents the documentation prepared for the meeting of the OECD Education Committee at Ministerial Level held on 16 and 17 January 1996. It analyzes these challenges in the light of five major trends in OECD economies and widening reach and impact of information technologies, the gathering of momentum of globalization and trade liberalization, the aging of the population, growing cultural and ethnic diversity, and the changing nature of work.
