Jakob Christoph Miville 1786–1836

Ein Basler Landschaftsmaler zwischen Rom und St. Petersburg

En savoir plus sur le livre

Jakob Christoph Miville (1786–1836) was an artist based in Basel, but he produced drawings and paintings around the world. A sojourn in Rome and travels to the Alps influenced his early heroic landscapes, but it was not until he went to Russia (1809–17) that he discovered his own sense of nature. The vast landscapes he found in the Crimea and the Caucasus inspired his development as a Romantic landscape painter. The extensive material he brought back to his hometown also formed the foundation for his paintings in Switzerland. In collaboration with the Stiftung für Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts in Olten, the Kunstmuseum Basel has produced the first extensive volume devoted to Miville and his immediate artistic environment; the book assembles drawings and paintings from both Swiss and Russian collections.
