An eavesdropping network led by the United States spans the planet. The system, known as Echelon, allows the US and its allies to intercept the private phone calls and e-mails of civilians and governments around the world. We start out at Menwith Hill in England's Yorkshire moors, a secret eavesdropping station covered in mysterious, gargantuan golf balls; the narrative then moves quickly to other spy stations, traveling all the way to the remote Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia.
