Until then the archaeological material which was received in the Ottoman capital was displayed in the Çinili Köşk, or the Tiled Pavilion. The discovery of such a large collection made the construction of a new building imperative. When these sarcophagi were brought to İstanbul through Osman Hamdi Bey's – the Director of the Ottoman Imperial Museum of the time – efforts, the present day old museum building was constructed and opened to the public on 13th June 1891.
