A thrilling trove of newly discovered color works from a photographer celebrated for his pioneering painterly vision. Saul Leiter (1923–2013), now recognized as one of the world’s greatest photographers, gained prominence with the 2006 publication of his first collection, which showcased his unique approach to color photography during a time when black and white was the standard. His stunning portrayals of midcentury New York street life evoke the sensuality of Abstract Expressionist contemporaries like Rothko and Newman. Leiter lived and worked in the East Village from 1952 until his death, and his studio is now home to the Saul Leiter Foundation, which is conducting a comprehensive survey of his extensive body of work, exceeding 80,000 pieces. This volume features previously unpublished color photography from slides recently discovered through this initiative. Edited by Margit Erb and Michael Parillo, it includes texts detailing the assembly and restoration of Leiter's slide archive. Leiter, born in Pittsburgh, pioneered a painterly style in the 1940s and created covers for major fashion magazines before retreating from the limelight in the 1980s. His rediscovery led to global exhibitions and a documentary, solidifying his legacy in the art world. He passed away in New York in 2013.
