Twelve reading exercises introduce the basic grammatical principles and are carefully graded to allow the reader to build up a knowledge of common signs and vocabulary as well as giving a broad introduction to Hieroglyphic Luwian literature. Grammatical analysis, commentary, vocabulary notes and a revision section accompany each text. Hieroglyphic Luwian belongs to the Anatolian group of ancient languages and was inscribed primarily on stone, using an indigenous Anatolian pictorial writing system. These Hieroglyphic Luwian inscriptions were written over a period of centuries in the region of Anatolia and northern Syria. Their authors were primarily the rulers of the so-called Neo-Hittite states, contemporaries and neighbors of early Israel. The Lydians, speakers of an ancient Indo-European language, ruled Western Asia Minor under the Mermnad dynasty during the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The last Mermnad king, Croesus, is often regarded as a symbol of immense wealth. Beyond Croesus, the Lydians are renowned for inventing coinage and for their significant presence in Graeco-Roman literature, especially in Herodotus's writings, which influenced later artistic works like Friedrich Hebbel’s tragedy and Alexander Zemlinky’s opera. Primary knowledge of the Lydians comes from archaeological findings, as the native Lydian texts are limited, and later sources may reflect bias. Zwischen ca. 1500–700 v. Chr. wurde in Anatolien und Nord-Syrien von den Hethitern und ihren Nachfolgestaaten neben der Keilschrift auch eine indigene Hieroglyphenschrift verwendet, die hauptsächlich auf Steindenkmälern erhalten ist. Diese luwischsprachigen Inschriften stellen insbesondere für das sogenannte „dunkle Zeitalter“ nach 1200 v. Chr. eine der wichtigsten Quellen für die Geschichte des östlichen Mittelmeerraumes dar. Die Hieroglyphenforschung gewinnt derzeit durch neue Inschriftenfunde, unter denen jüngst der früheste Beleg für das Land Palästina auftauchte, kontinuierlich an Bedeutung. Der vorliegende Band trägt durch Einzeluntersuchungen zu Schrift und Schriftlichkeit der Hieroglyphen zu einem besseren Verständnis dieses Schriftsystems, seiner kulturellen Bedeutung und ihren Inhalten bei. Unter anderem werden die Struktur der Schrift vorgestellt und ein Einblick in die Paläografie der erhaltenen Monumentalinschriften gegeben.
