Chinese artist Liu Ye’s subtle, colorful canvases convey his love of literature in the artist’s first publication solely dedicated to his paintings of books. Beijing-based artist Liu Ye is known for his precise, deftly rendered representational paintings. Reminiscent of cartoons and illustrations in children’s books, they include references to abstract artists such as Piet Mondrian. In this new publication devoted exclusively to his Book Paintings, the artist examines the book as both a physical object and cultural totem. He simultaneously stresses the geometry in the composition while always imbuing his paintings with his uniquely recognizable style. The result is a body of work that feels both alien and familiar. Liu's Book Painting series, begun in 2013, depicts closeup views of books that are turned open to reveal empty pages, a strategy that emphasizes the object’s formal qualities over its content. Intimately scaled, these paintings indicate an appreciation of the book as an object, as well as a love of literature—Liu’s father was a children’s book author who introduced him to Western writers at a young age, fueling his curiosity and imagination. Published on the occasion of a solo exhibition presented at David Zwirner, New York, in 2020, this catalogue includes new writing by the acclaimed poet Zhu Zhu and an interview with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist.

DASFAA is an annual international database conference, located in the Asia-Pacific region,which show cases state-of-the-art R & D activities in databases-terms and their applications. It provides a forum for technical presentations and discussions among database researchers, developers and users from academia, business and industry. DASFAA 2015 the 20th in the series, was held during April 20-23, 2015 in Hanoi, Vietnam. In this year, we carefully selected two workshops, each focusing on specific research issues that contribute to the main themes of the DASFAA conference. This volume contains the final versions of papers accepted for the two workshops: Second International Workshop on Semantic Computing and Personalization (SeCoP 2015); Second International Workshop on Big Data Management and Service (BDMS 2015); and a Poster Session. [All the workshops were selected via a public call-for-proposals process. The workshop organizers put a tremendous amount of effort into soliciting and - lecting papers with a balance of high quality, new ideas and new applications. We asked all workshops to follow a rigid paper selection process, including the procedure to ensure that any Program Committee members are excluded from the paper review process of any paper they are involved with. A requirement about the overall paper acceptance rate of no more than 50% was also imposed on all the workshops.]

This book provides a comprehensive study of the state of the art in location privacy for mobile applications. This book investigates the changing opportunities in higher education for different social groups during China’s transition from the socialist regime to a market economy. The first part of the book provides a historical and comparative analysis of the development of the idea of meritocracy, since its early origins in China, and in more recent western thought. The second part then explores higher education reforms in China, the part played by supposedly meritocratic forms of selection, and the implications of these for social mobility. Based on original empirical data, Ye Liu sheds light on the socio-economic, gender and geographical inequalities behind the meritocratic façade of the Gaokao (高考). Liu argues that the Chinese philosophical belief in education-based meritocracy had a modern makeover in the Gaokao, and that this ideology induces working-class and rural students to believe in upward social mobility through higher education. When the Gaokao broke the promise of status improvement for rural students, they turned to the Chinese Communist Party and sought political connections by actively applying for its membership. This book reveals a bleak picture of visible and invisible inequality in terms of access to and participation in higher education in contemporary China. Written in an accessible style, it offers a valuable resource for researchers and non-specialist readers alike.

The New Cooperative Medical Scheme (NCMS) was implemented in 2003 in response to the poor state of health care in rural China. It holds the primary objective of insuring rural residents against catastrophic health expenses, protecting them from impoverishment caused by medical expenses. The objective of this study, therefore, is to explore variation in the determinants of household enrolment in this scheme and the impact of enrolment on health care utilization and medical expenditures in three large geographic regions in China and further to simulate the reimbursement package design in order to achieve better financing protection and policy effectiveness.
