Das Prinzip der Dualität steht in physischer ebenso wie in metaphorischer Hinsicht seit jeher im Mittelpunkt von Stezakers Arbeit. In seiner jüngsten Collagenwerkreihe „Double Shadow“ bedient sich der Künstler Prozessen des Teilens und Verdoppelns, um über das Unheimliche duplizitärer Figuren zu reflektieren: etwa jener des Doppelgängers, des Janus und des Hermaphroditen. Durch eine Aneinandersetzung silhouettenhafter Konturen wird den aus trivialen Quellen übernommenen archetypischen Bildern neues Leben eingegeben. Die in Hollywood-Bildgestaltungen der 1950er-Jahre so scharf umrissenen Profile von Männlichkeit und Weiblichkeit lösen sich in eigentümliche, bisweilen monströse Hybride auf; es entstehen beunruhigende Nebeneinanderstellungen an der Überlagerung von Schattenbereichen, die sich zwischen den Welten aufzutun scheinen. Von der Verwendung von Schattenrissen in Märchenillustrationen des Fin de Siècle wie auch dem frühen expressionistischen Film ließ sich Stezaker nach eigener Aussage dazu anregen, in diesen Werken „die Freude am Zeichnen“ ebenso wiederzuentdecken wie „die Kraft des Konturs, eine Trennlinie zwischen An- und Abwesenheit sowie dem Imaginären und dem Realen abzustecken“.

For the first time, this large-format volume brings together John Stezaker's uniquesilkscreen works executed between 1977 and 1994. Stezaker is best known forhis intimate collages of film stills, postcards and other found imagery; these mid- tolarge-scale silkscreens add a new, fascinating perspective to the perception of thisinventive British artist. While this body of work seems to contrast with the collages,in fact it uses many of the same techniques, like cutting out, cropping, slicing,over-laying and repetition, and create the dark, cinematic feeling, alternatelymenacing and satirical, that pervades Stezaker's work. John Stezaker's found images, collages and image fragments are most associated with cinematic imagery, however it is the other found-image sources which he has worked with over the past 30 years which is the focus of this publication; notably the artist's Bridge collages and the anatomical nudes of his 'Falland Expulsion' series. This catalogue, published in association with Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, Philadelphia, which showed the exhibition 'John Stezaker: The Nude and Landscape' in October 2011, centres on Stezaker's works from the 1980s when he switched from the cinematic imagery of the 1970s towards 'an engagement with the culture of the image to the nature of the image'. The catalogue presents many new works that have not been shown before and, interestingly, also unaltered found images so similar to the Stezaker collages that they are only identifiable when focussing on the absence or presence of the artist's cut.0Exhibition: Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, Philadelphia, USA.
