Les œuvres et actions de Gottfried Helnwein suscitent régulièrement des débats. Ses images douloureuses refusent délibérément au spectateur le confort de l'art, posent des questions inconfortables et n'apportent pas de réponses. Helnwein est souvent considéré comme le successeur d'Andy Warhol, un chroniqueur implacable de son temps. Cette monographie rétrospective présente toutes les étapes de son développement artistique, des œuvres photoréalistes révolutionnaires, comme Peinlich (1971), qui établit déjà d'importants fils thématiques par la combinaison d'une image d'enfant et d'une référence à la bande dessinée, au célèbre autoportrait (Blackout) de 1982, devenu célèbre dans le monde entier en tant que couverture d'album des Scorpions, jusqu'à des œuvres plus récentes, comme la série troublante Disasters of War, qui met en avant des filles gravement blessées.

Xenia Hausner is one of the most important Austrian woman artists of our time. This decorative volume focuses on the aspect of stagecraft which characterises all her works. Starting from the early works from the 1990s to her most recent moving Exiles series, the publication lures us into the mysterious world of inter-personal relationships. The artist, who previously worked as a set designer, constructs three-dimensional settings for her pictures in her studio beforehand. Fragments of cars or train compartments become backdrops, and mundane everyday objects become co-actors in her quirky comic strips. The artist confronts us through staged excerpts with the contradictions inherent within ourselves, with facets which we do not reveal to the outside world. The fiction is what permits her to search with a penetrating vision for the true heart of the matter and to reveal it in her pictures. Der Künstler setzt seine Darstellungen auch dazu ein, Nationalsozialismus und Holocaust oder das Tabuthema des Missbrauchs anzuprangern. Helnwein gilt bis heute als Provokateur. Mit seinen Werken, die nach fotografischen Vorlagen entstehen und durch ihre technische Perfektion bestechen, gelingt es ihm nach wie vor, Menschen aufzurütteln. »Meine Bilder haben schockiert, weil ich sichtbar gemacht habe, was die Leute lieber unsichtbar gelassen hätten.«

Beginning with her early pieces from the 1990s and culminating in the poignant Exiles series, the book transports readers into a feminine world filled with mysterious relationships. Hausner's painting is rooted in photography; the artist constructs spatial settings in her studio and captures a moment akin to a film still. Translated into painting, her images create a dramatic tension, suggesting that what is shown must lead to the next image to reveal its mysteries. Through the staged elements in her works—the painted captured lie—we encounter the contradictions of our existence and find an alternative to a male-dominated visual language.
