Aus Anlass des 650-jährigen Gründungsjubiläums verfolgt das Buch Stätten des Wissens den Weg der Universität Wien von den Anfängen bis heute entlang ihrer Bauten. Hierbei verbindet der reich illustrierte Band 650 Jahre Baugeschichte mit der historischen Entwicklung der „Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis“ und macht deutlich, wie jeder Bau für sich, ein Signum seiner Epoche und zugleich den bleibenden Ausdruck eines gelebten Selbstverständnisses der Universität, darstellt. Entstanden ist eine Sammlung von Essays zu den „Stätten des Wissens“ der Universität Wien, verfasst von Kunsthistorikern und Experten der Wissenschafts- und Universitätsgeschichte, ergänzt durch Beiträge mit architekturkritischer Sicht.

The architecture of some public buildings exhibits a commitment to economic restraint and a subordination to an international aesthetic of dutifulness. Other public buildings exhibit a heightened sensitivity to place – to topography, architectural setting, and select cultural inheritances. The decision-making processes that led up to the implementation of such projects are often insufficiently appreciated. The 20 contributions to this volume, focused on Central Europe, address the problem of defining and locating public buildings as architectural expressions in a protracted period of transition between feudal and modern constitutional social orders.

The analysis of local and international relations of "Vienna Medicine" in the 19th and 20th century and its networks and structures from an important research desiderate. The volume examines these relations with the aim to re-contextualise the history of medical research and practice in Vienna. The contributions of the volume analyse mobility, exchange processes of knowledge, standards and guidelines, social and professional networking, politics, transformations of political and philosophical concepts 'between' centers of medicine, exchange of artistic and medical spheres, and commemoration practices - as transnational phenomena and in their influence on medical research and practice in Vienna.
