Set against the backdrop of 1980s Lagos, the narrative follows Tolani, a bank secretary whose life takes a drastic turn due to government austerity and a series of misfortunes. Persuaded by her roommate Rose, she contemplates drug trafficking as a means of survival. As Tolani navigates the challenges of temptation and the moral dilemmas that arise, she embarks on a turbulent journey of self-discovery, ultimately questioning her values and the choices she makes.

Set in post-civil war Lagos in 1976, the narrative unfolds around Remi Lawal, a greeting-card shop owner, who forms a deep bond with Frances Cooke, an American art dealer. As they share their dreams and concerns, Remi's husband grows suspicious of Frances's true intentions, fearing she may be a CIA operative. The assassination of General Muhammed forces Remi to reassess her trust in Frances. Blending personal and political intrigue, the story explores themes of loyalty, motherhood, and patriotism against a backdrop of national instability.

Die Nigerianerin Deola ist 39 und hat viel erreicht. Sie arbeitet in London als Wirtschaftsprüferin internationaler Hilfsorganisationen, ihr Job ist anspruchsvoll und einträglich.
