Ganz anders Silas: Er unternimmt immer häufiger ausgedehnte Ausflüge auf seiner schwarzen Stute. Bei einem dieser Ausflüge sieht Silas eine Kutsche mit durchgehenden Pferden. Unter Einsatz seines Lebens kann er die Kutsche anhalten. Aus Dank lädt der reiche Kaufmann Sandal ihn ein, mit der Familie in der Stadt zu leben. Dort erwarten Silas allerhand gefährliche Abenteuer. Am Ende muß er sich zwischen einem Leben in der Stadt und seiner eigenen Freiheit entscheiden.
