Zoey has some boy-thoughts to distract her, with a chance to make up with super-hot-ex Eric. But thoughts of the archer that died, semi-permanently, in her arms also keep distracting her. Then he shows up as Neferet's newest minion ..

Pendant que des assassins, humains, sèment la mort dans la Maison de la Nuit, Lucie, sa meilleure amie, rate sa transformation en vampire. Elle ressuscite sous la forme d'une morte vivante et erre désormais dans les rues à la recherche de sang frais... Zoey doit impérativement trouver un moyen de la sauver. Mais elle ne sait comment s'y prendre. Et demander conseil à ses amis les plus proches risquerait de les mettre en danger. Son seul appui ? Aphrodite, son ennemie jurée...

Met zestien jaar wordt Zoey Redbird "Gemarkeerd" door een vampiertracker en begint ze de "Verandering" te ondergaan naar een echte vampier. Ze moet haar familie verlaten en verhuizen naar de House of Night, een internaat in Tulsa, Oklahoma, voor andere beginnende vampiers zoals zij. Het is moeilijk om een nieuw leven te beginnen, weg van haar ouders en vrienden, en bovendien blijkt Zoey geen gemiddelde beginnende vampier te zijn. Ze is uitgekozen door de vampiergodin Nyx. Hoewel Zoey geweldige nieuwe krachten heeft, is het moeilijk om erbij te horen als iedereen weet dat ze speciaal is. Stark, un novice champion de tir à l'arc, débarque à la Maison de la Nuit. Zoey se sent tout de suite attirée par lui. Mais Stark meurt bientôt dans ses bras, juste après l'avoir embrassée. Commence alors une terrible mission pour Zoey : empêcher à tout prix que Neferet s'empare du corps, au cas où il ressusciterait comme Lucie... Pendant ce temps, Aphrodite a une vision : la mystérieuse reine Tsi Sgili prépare le retour sur Terre de Kalona, ange déchu monstrueux, et de ses enfants, les Corbeaux Moqueurs. Ces derniers s'attaquent violemment à Zoey, qui parvient à les repousser grâce au pouvoir du vent. Ils s'en prennent alors à sa grand-mère qui se retrouve à l'hôpital, entre la vie et la mort. C'est ce moment que choisit Neferet pour faire son apparition, aux côtés de Stark...

Dans un monde qui pourrait être le nôtre vit Zoey Redbird, une adolescente presque comme les autres... Un soir après les cours, un jeune homme inquiétant s'approche d'elle. Soudain, il la désigne du doigt et lui dit : "Zoey, ta mort sera ta renaissance, ton destin t'attend à la Maison de la Nuit". A ces mots, une marque mystérieuse apparaît sur son front. Zoey est terrifiée mais - elle le sait - elle doit intégrer le pensionnat où sont formés les futurs vampires, pour y réussir sa Transformation, ou mourir.

Zoey a trouvé sa place dans la Maison de la Nuit. Désormais, pour exercer son autorité, elle peut compter sur le soutien sans faille de ses amis et de son petit copain Erik. Mais un jour surviennent des événements tragiques : des adolescents humains sont assassinés. Tout laisse à penser qu'il s'agit de l'oeuvre de vampires rebelles... Zoey a besoin de tous ses pouvoirs pour trouver les coupables car la mort frappe, impitoyable... Surtout, aura-t-elle le courage d'affronter la terrible trahison, à laque était loin de s'attendre ?
