Anstatt die Marktwirtschaft durch Regulierungen an den Menschen anzupassen, wird der Mensch dem totalen Kapitalismus unterworfen, wobei der Konkurrenzkampf zur menschlichen Natur und der Konsum zum Sinn des Lebens erklärt wird. Doch seit der Einführung des totalen Kapitalismus steht genau dies auf dem Spiel. Unabhängig von den vielen Veränderungen in der wirtschaftlichen, politischen, symbolischen oder psychischen Ökonomie scheinen alle darauf abzuzielen, das kritische, neurotische Subjekt der Moderne durch ein unkritisches, gefühlloses und konsumoffenes Subjekt zu ersetzen. Das Problem ist nicht nur der Wandel in der Geschichte der menschlichen Verfasstheit, sondern dass der Mensch Gefahr läuft, der Sprache verlustig zu gehen – dem Element, das ihn vom Tier unterscheidet.
