Francouzský muzikolog Henry-Louis de La Grange (1924–2017) dosáhl významného úspěchu v 70. letech, kdy publikoval první díl monografie o Gustavu Mahlerovi, rakouském dirigentovi a skladateli z moravských Kališť. Tato publikace, nejprve v angličtině a později revidovaná i ve francouzštině, položila základy pro mahlerovská studia. Další díly vyšly na počátku 80. let a potvrdily její význam, přičemž poslední, čtvrtý díl, byl vydán anglicky v roce 2008. De La Grange se Mahlerem a jeho dílem zabýval celý život, čímž přispěl k rozšíření povědomí o skladateli v západní Evropě. Organizoval mahlerovské festivaly, výstavy a sympozia, a díky přátelství s Mahlerovými blízkými shromáždil mnoho poznatků a dosud neznámých materiálů.
