Set in 1796, the story follows Will Rees, a traveling weaver who has returned to his Maine farm after years of wandering. He finds solace in his domestic life with his teenage son, David, and housekeeper Lydia, whose companionship brings him unexpected joy. However, their peace is abruptly disrupted when a visitor arrives with shocking news of an old friend's murder, thrusting Rees back into a world of danger and mystery that challenges his newfound stability.
