Za dávných časů vedla lidská chamtivost ke konfliktu přírody s ostatními tvory. Země se pokryla hustou mlhou a vesnice začaly být napadány divokými zvířaty. Gerta, mladá hrdinka tohoto příběhu, poté co ztratí po útoku nestvůrného tvora oba rodiče, má jediné přání, aby už nikdo další nepocítil stejnou bolest. K dosažení svého cíle by se musela stát válečníci, avšak toto postavení náleží pouze mužům. Rozhodne se proto, tajně zúčastnit iniciační zkoušky; tak začíná dobrodružství, ve kterém jde o mnoho více než o obyčejnou pomstu.
