In 1814, the great Japanese artist and printmaker Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) published the first volume of his sketches: Hokusai Manga. Originally designed as a reference for his students to emulate, it surpassed all expectations and became a bestseller, eventually expanding to fifteen volumes and over four thousand images. This three-volume edition is an extensive selection of Hokusai’s sketches, which present all the themes, motifs, and techniques found in his art. Although they are not based around an ongoing narrative, the caricatures, satirical drawings, and multipanel illustrations can clearly be seen as a forerunner of manga as it is understood today. Volume 1 explores Edo Life, the everyday world of the city that would later become Tokyo, featuring people from all walks of life at work and at play. Hokusai ist für mich wie Rembrandt: ein ganz alter Meister, der mich immer schon beeinflusst hat. Schon in den 80er-Jahren gibt es Zeichnungen und Bilder, mit dem Fuji darauf. Der Fuji war lange Zeit für mich eine Art Sehnsucht. Ich habe da irgendetwas hineinprojiziert, ein gelobtes Land, falls es das überhaupt noch gibt auf dieser Welt. ( Roman Scheidl )
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) ist der bedeutendste Vertreter des traditionellen Farbholzschnitts, auch bekannt als ukiyo-e, und erreichte mit seiner Kunst höchste Vollendung. Er perfektionierte nicht nur die Technik, sondern eröffnete auch ein neues Sujet: die Landschaft als eigenständiges Motiv. Seine berühmte Serie 36 Ansichten des Berges Fuji wurde 1830 veröffentlicht und gilt bereits zu Hokusais Lebzeiten als eine seiner bekanntesten Arbeiten. Besonders das erste Blatt, „Die große Welle vor Kanagawa“, ist heute das weltweit bekannteste japanische Kunstwerk. Hokusai verwendete ein ungewöhnlich großes Format (ca. 25 x 38 cm) und eine neuartige Druckfarbe: Preußisch-Blau, das Wasser, Himmel, Ferne und den Berg selbst durchzieht. Der Berg erscheint in verschiedenen Perspektiven und bei wechselnden Lichtverhältnissen. Seit 2005 besitzt das Kupferstichkabinett der Bibliothèque nationale de France die komplette Fuji-Serie in herausragenden Drucken. Aus drei Privatsammlungen wurde ein hochwertiges Konvolut der 36 Blätter zusammengestellt, das die Grundlage für diese erste kommentierte Monographie bildet. Hokusais beeindruckender Hymnus an den Heiligen Berg wird durch den einführenden Text und die Erläuterungen von Jocelyn Bouquillard, Kurator für Photographie und Druckgraphik, optimal präsentiert.
