Henri Matisse (1869–1954) byl hlavním představitelem fauvismu, vytvářel jasnými barevnými skvrnami a jejich rytmem tvar i prostor, později začal více uplatňovat vedle barvy i linii. Byl mistr barev a malířské zkratky. Nebyl přítelem teoretizování, ale okolnosti ho nutily k tomu, aby svůj přístup k tvorbě osvětloval a formuloval své úvahy o umění.
