      Im September 1901 erschoss ein Anarchist den US-Präsidenten William McKinley. Der Senator Joseph R. Hawley setzte sofort ein Kopfgeld auf jeden zu tötenden Anarchisten aus. Da meldete sich eine rhetorisch eminente, hochsensible, furchtlose idealistische Anarchistin zu Wort – Voltairine de Cleyre. Sie schrieb Hawley: »Mich dürfen Sie jederzeit umbringen. Ich werde genau in der Distanz vor Ihnen stehen, die Sie wollen. Dann dürfen Sie vor Zeugen schießen. Klingt das nicht wie ein Schnäppchen?« Nahezu ausradiert ist im öffentlichen, die ambivalenten Feinheiten der Geschichte ausblendenden Politikdiskurs der USA der Anarchismus. De Cleyres’ politisches Konzept war aber nicht die brutale Gewalt der russischen Anarchisten, deren Blutdurst in Nihilismus kippte. 160 Jahre nach der Geburt Voltairine de Cleyres, die Armut erlebte und Qualen in katholischen Klosterschulen, die emotional nie wirklich stabilen Halt finden durfte, also de Cleyre in einem Jahr zu entdecken, in dem der Wille von dreizehn nordamerikanischen Kolonien, sich von Bevormundung, Ausbeutung und Despotie zu befreien, zum 250. Mal jährt, diese Verfechterin der Gleichberechtigung und radikaler Freiheit heute zu lesen –heißt staunen. Staunen, wie klar sie um 1900 die Lage der Frauen sah und wie zeitlos ihre Gesellschaftsanalysen geblieben sind.
