A partir del siglo XVIII Italia y Grecia se convirtieron en lugares de culto y peregrinación obligada de los aristócratas jóvenes, cuya educación se consideraba incompleta hasta visitar la cuna de la cultura occidental para contemplar in situ algunos de sus mayores logros. Fue una tradición conocida como el Grand Tour, y a ella contribuyeron definitivamente obras como Viaje a Italia de Goethe, una de las primeras que atestigua la honda impresión que causaron los paisajes y las esencias mediterráneas en los habitantes de las tierras del norte.
