Ludwig Bemelmans

    Ludwig Bemelmans était un auteur autrichien, un gourmet de renommée internationale, ainsi qu'un écrivain et illustrateur de livres pour enfants. Il est aujourd'hui surtout connu pour ses livres Madeline, dont six ont été publiés entre 1939 et 1961. Un septième a été découvert après sa mort et publié à titre posthume en 1999.

      April 1945: In New York erscheint ein Roman mit dem Titel The Blue Danube, der sofort Aufsehen erregt. Sein Verfasser war dreißig Jahre zuvor nach Amerika ausgewandert. Mit einer geradezu unglaublichen Präzision erzählt er vom Grauen des NS-Staats, vom Alltag des Terrors in der deutschen Provinz. Der Roman, von dem es bis heute keine deutsche Übersetzung gab, spielt 1944 und beginnt in einem Biergarten an der Donau, in dem sich Herr Stolz, der Gauleiter von Regensburg, über das Essen beklagt. Als er zu einer Kapuzinerpredigt über den Schwarzhandel anheben will, schreit jemand: „Ein Schwein!“ In diesem Augenblick spaziert der Bürgermeister am Donaukai vorbei, doch es handelt sich um ein echtes Schwein, das mitten im Fluß auf einem Floß dahintreibt und schließlich auf einer Insel landet, die von den Fischers bewohnt wird, die hier den Regensburger Rettich anbauen. Die Insel ist „ein Stachel im Fleisch des Finanzamts“, weil sie nirgends registriert ist, offiziell also gar nicht existiert. Vor allem aber erweisen sich die Inselbewohner nicht nur als eigensinnig, sondern auch als renitent gegenüber der Naziherrschaft.
