In 1959, agents acting for British Intelligence mastermind the famous escape of the Dalai Lama from Tibet. Three years later, Whitehall is again behind a spectacular secret mission against the occupying Chinese Forces... Paul Chavasse is persuaded to return because he is the only man who knows about Tibet. Knows about the evil its oppressors are capable of. Knows just about enough to bring a vitally important scientist back to the West alive. Chavasse thought he was aware of the risks. An illegal plane flight through the high Himalayas, a dangerous rendezvous with the Tibetan freedom fighters, almost certain confrontation with a trigger-happy army. But success is never a certainty. Not when your soul is almost destroyed by a cruel and vicious captor. And not when your heart is in thrall to the beautiful women who may aid your betrayal...

With commando-like precision, someone was breaking Britain's most notorious prisoners out of jail, and delivering convicted spies back to the Soviets. His code name was The Baron -- there was just one way to trace him: put a secret operative inside the walls and let the Baron get him out. To do it the Special Branch needed an agent with the cunning mind of a criminal and the cold heart of a killer. That agent was Paul Chavasse.
