In this compelling collection of tales Roald Dahl's urbane and sophisticated wit is directed at the unfathomable mysteries and eccentricities of rural life.

    Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life

This is the story of Robert Lawrence of the Scots Guards who was severely wounded as he led his platoon in an attack against an Argentinian machine-gun position during the battle for Tumbledown Mountain in 1982. The injury to Lawrence's head was so severe that it was assumed that he would die and he had to wait for four hours before medical staff could help him, but he did eventually make a recovery, coming to terms with his paralysis.

The memoir offers a humorous and candid glimpse into the trials of medical school, chronicling John's evolution from a hesitant liberal-arts student to a confident medical doctor. Through entertaining anecdotes, he shares the challenges of gaining admission, mastering anatomy with quirky mnemonic devices, and the realities of delivering babies. His self-deprecating humor and unique storytelling style keep readers engaged as he reveals the often unseen experiences within the medical profession.

    Playing Doctor; Part One
  • A mesmerising episode from the universe of His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust, giving us an extraordinary insight into this world and its characters. When Lyra is studying at Oxford University, she comes across the story of Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnisson's first meeting, many years ago, along with much evidence of the adventure that brought them together. She discovers that when a young Texan balloonist Lee came down to earth in the harbour of an Arctic town in the North, little did he realise that he is about to be caught in a war between the residents of the town and the huge arctic bears that also live there. And when Lee meets one of these bears - Iorek - for the first time, they cement a friendship that will continue throughout their lives, as the tensions in the town threaten to erupt ... Another wonderful tale from a master story-teller, which includes beautiful illustrations and maps.

Once Upon a Time in the North
  • Arthur Kipps did not believe in ghosts. Few attend Mrs. Alice Drablow's funeral, and not one blood relative amongst them. There are undertakers with shovels, of course, a local official who would rather be anywhere else, and one Mr. Arthur Kipps, solicitor from London. He is to spend the night in Eel Marsh House, the place where the old recluse died amidst a sinking swamp, a blinding fog and a baleful mystery about which the townsfolk refuse to speak. Young Mr. Kipps expects a boring evening alone sorting out paperwork and searching for Mrs. Drablow's will. But when the high tide pens him in, what he finds -- or rather what finds him -- is something else entirely.
