The four novels gathered here, Miss Lonelyhearts, A Cool Million, The Day of the Locust and The Dream Life of Balso Snell, constitute the complete longer works of one the most brilliant and original American writers.

Dvě krátké novely. Za svůj krátký, tragicky ukončený život stihl Nathanael West (1903–1940) napsat pouze čtyři kratší prózy. Zatímco Přítelkyně osamělých srdcí i Den kobylek už vyšly v českém překladu, tyto dvě satirické novely u nás vycházejí poprvé. Nathanael West byl spisovatel, jenž měl dar k psaní téměř dokonalých parodií – trochu méně znalý čtenář by místy mohl jeho příběhy brát vážně. Snový život Balso Snella (1931) je téměř surrealistickým výletem jakéhosi básníka Balso Snella do těla bájného trojského koně, kam vstoupí „branou tajemna“, tj. řitním otvorem, a na své cestě tlustým střevem potkává nejrůznější rádoby literáty, kteří touží po publiku, jímž se nechtěně stává Balso Snell. Majlant (1934) vypráví na hlavu obrácený, v té době v Americe oblíbený pohádkový příběh, jak šikovný a čestný mladík může ke štěstí, vzorné ženě a penězům přijíti. Podtitul tohoto půvabného dílka Rozebrání Lemuela Pitkina napovídá, jak asi Westovo převyprávění vyústí.

Nathanael Wests bitterböse Satire auf das Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten ist eines der abgründigsten Bücher der US-Literatur – von markerschütternder Tragik und zugleich zum Schreien komisch. Nie wurde der amerikanische Traum genüsslicher konterkariert als in dieser temporeichen Wildwestfarce. Die Welt gehört den Braven und den Tüchtigen! Das jedenfalls glaubt Lemuel Pitkin, der in seiner jungenhaften Einfalt fortwährend an die Falschen gerät: an Revolverkapitalisten, Rattenfänger, Rowdys. Dieser Roman entlarvt den Aberwitz einer Welt, in der alles den Gesetzen von Show und Big Business unterworfen ist. Die heiter-beschwingte Art, in der der Erzähler die größten Ungeheuerlichkeiten Revue passieren lässt, macht das Buch zur aufwühlenden Provokation. Mit formvollendeter Perfidie strapaziert Nathanael West die amerikanische Glücksrhetorik, bis diese in puren Zynismus umschlägt.

Slečna Dušehojivá (1933), autorovo najlepšie dielo, je príbehom novinára, ktorý píše rubriku pre „zlomené srdcia". Trik pôvodne vymyslený na zvýšenie počtu odberateľov nadobudne však v priebehu deja charakter drámy a končí sa tragicky. Deň kobyliek (1939) je zas príbeh zo sveta rovnako nezmyselného a založeného na falošných ilúziách, zo sveta filmu. Patrí k najlepším románom, aké boli o Hollywoode napísané, umelecká analýza Hollywoodu tridsiatych rokov tu dosahuje vysoký stupeň literárneho majstrovstva. Autor nastavil svojou tvorbou zrkadlo priemernému Američanovi, odhalil korene jeho bezvýchodiskovej existencie, založenej na pomýlených ideáloch a naplnenej honbou za materiálnym bohatstvom.
