Když Erlend díky své neukázněnosti přijde o rodinné jmění, zjišťuje Kristina, že nic pro ni neznamená tolik jako jejich láska a dokáže mu odpustit. Hrdinka Ida Alžběta probíjí se po rozvodu statečně životem i se svými dvěma chlapci a usilovnou prací se jí podaří vybudovat novou existenci. Nevšední konflikt mezi srdcem a povinností, mezi novou láskou a churavým mužem ohrozí její těžce získaný klid. V tom, jak Ida Alžběta obětuje zase nakonec naději svobodného a velikého života službě muži i svým dvěma dětem, je kus velikého umění, které zanechává v čtenáři otřásající i očistný dojem. V žádném jiném románě z moderního života nevrhla autorka tak prudké světlo na tajemství lidského srdce, kolísajicího mezi světem katastrof a hlubinou klidu.

Kristina Vavřincova je příběh velké tragické lásky. V prvním díle sleduje život a citový růst a bloudění zemanské dcerky z norských hor od dívčích let až do sňatku s okouzlujícím, ale neukázněným Erlendem. Pro tuto lásku se mladičká Kristina dovede vzepřít i milovanému otci, dovedetěžce hřešit proti nejzákladnějším společenským a mravním zákonům. Nesmírně tím však trpí, tím více, že brzy pozná Erlendovu lehkovážnost a nespolehlivost. Jeho slabosti ji jen ještě víc k němu připoutávají. Ovšem její láska se tím mění – vyprchává z ní pocit štěstí a prohlubuje se o vědomí odpovědnosti za dva. Příběh je zasazen do barvitého prostředí 14. stol. a do divoké norské přírody, oživené v myslích lidí ještě troly a vílami. Avšak lidské typy Undsetové mají nadčasovou platnost – jsou to lidé s vášněmi a bolestmi dnešního člověka.

Den Anfang macht Band 1, Der Kranz, Band 2 und 3, Die Frau und Das Kreuz, folgen jeweils in halbjährlichem Abstand.
