Entre l'automne 1225 et celui de 1226, dans les tout derniers mois de sa vie, François d'Assise composa son célèbre Cantique des créatures, dit aussi Cantique de frère soleil. Sans instrument de musique, il improvisa ce chant, premier chef-d'œuvre de la littérature italienne, qui fait maintenant partie du patrimoine spirituel de l'humanité. Nul n'a exprimé avec plus de tendresse cette extraordinaire proximité avec le soleil, la lune, la terre ou le vent, qualifiés de " frères " et " sœurs " par le poverello. Cet amour universel pour le monde et les êtres transparaît aussi dans les passages légendaires des Fioretti, où l'on voit François parler en ami aux oiseaux et au loup. Pour retrouver ces textes dans leur saveur originelle, le calligraphe et graveur sur pierre Missant s'est imprégné de la culture italienne de la fin du Moyen Age, dont il restitue, à travers son art du trait, la sensibilité esthétique.
