Mais Ruald, touché par la grâce, a abandonné le foyer familial pour devenir moine à l'abbaye et depuis cette conversion, la disparition de Generys a suscité bien des rumeurs malveillantes. En labourant le nouveau champ, un cadavre de femme est mis à jour et les questions vont bon train. En premier lieu, il convient d'identifier la victime qui ne semble pas avoir succombé à une mort naturelle. Par la suite, on va rechercher son meurtrier. S'il s'agit des restes de Generys, frère Ruald devient suspect, mais il n'est pas le seul… Sulien Blount, le fils cadet de la famille à qui appartenait le champ, a quitté la région pour entamer un noviciat dans un monastère. Que cache cette fuite ? Herboriste et détective amateur, frère Cadfael entame les investigations. Dans cette dix-septième aventure de Cadfael, l'enquête policière l'emporte sur la partie historique. Christmas, 1141 AD.
