En 1948, Norman Mailer publie son premier roman, "Les nus et les morts", qui traite des combats des Américains dans le Pacifique pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, inspiré par sa presque deux années de service militaire aux Philippines et au Japon. Ce roman demeure l'une des œuvres clés de la littérature américaine sur la guerre. Mailer dresse un portrait saisissant de l'île pacifique d'Anopopei, défendue par les Japonais, où les troupes américaines débarquent. Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, commonly known as Fanny Hill, has been shrouded in mystery and controversy since John Cleland completed it in 1749. The Bishop of London called the work 'an open insult upon Religion and good manners' and James Boswell referred to it as 'a most licentious and inflaming book'. The story of a prostitute's rise to respectability, it has been recognized more recently as a unique combination of parody, sensual entertainment and a philosophical concept of sexuality borrowed from French libertine novels. Modern readers will appreciate it not only as an important contribution to revolutionary thought in the Age of Enlightenment, but also as a thoroughly entertaining and important work of erotic fiction, deserving of a place in the history of the English novel beside Richardson, Fielding and Smollett.

Dit verhaal speelt zich af in de Zambesivallei, waar een verzengende hitte 's zomers het leven van mens en dier bedreigt. Hoofdpersoon is de diep in donker Afrika geboren blanke Joseph Mahoney. Een rusteloos jager die oerwouden en steppen intrekt op zoek naar buit. Daar ontmoet hij ook de knappe Suzanne de Villiers, die de hartstochtelijke Mahoney keer op keer probeert te vlug af te zijn, maar uiteindelijk toch in zijn netten verstrikt raakt. Suzanne is echter opgevoed in het apartheidsdenken en kan Mahoney niet steunen in zijn strijd om de tegenstellingen tussen blank en zwart te verkleinen. Een ideaal dat overigens door groeiend wantrouwen en botte onverschilligheid steeds moeilijker bereikbaar is. De situatie bereikt een dramatisch hoogtepunt wanneer Mahoney extremistische negers ervan probeert te weerhouden om de Karibastuwdam in de Zambesivallei op te blazen.

Evenals Davis' eerste succesroman "De hete vallei" is ook zijn nieuwste boek een monumentaal werk. Het verhaal speelt beurtelings aan boord van een walvisvaarder in de Zuidelijke Ijszee en in Zuid-Afrika. Tegen een achtergrond van een rauwe mannengemeeschap, een allegaartje van rassen, types en sexuele voorkeuren, groeit een prachtig beschreven liefdesverhouding tussen de hoofdpersonen McQuade en de knappe verpleegster Victoria. Daar Victoria niet voor honderd procent blank is, slaat deze romance een golf van haat los bij de kleurlingen aan boord van de walvisvaarder en later bij de autoriteiten in Kaapstad.
