Originally published in 1946 and never before available in English, Music in Cuba is not only the best and most extensive study of Cuban musical history, it is a work of literature. Dvě novely kubánského autora naší doby. Barokní koncert (1974) se odehrává v Benátkách o masopustě roku 1733, kdy Vivaldi diriguje svou operu o aztéckém králi Montezumovi. Příběh vyjadřuje autorovo přesvědčení o nadčasovosti hudby a souvislosti jejích různých stylů. Harfa a stín (1979) je zamyšlením nad osobností Kryštofa Kolumba, nad motivací jeho objevitelských cest a úvahou o významu připojení Ameriky k Starému světu a také zamyšlením nad historií a problematikou americko-evropských vztahů.
