In 1939 werden Gustav Kleinmann, een Weense stoffeerder, en zijn zestienjarige zoon Fritz samen met honderden andere Joodse mannen gearresteerd door de SS. Losgerukt van hun familie werden Gustav en Fritz in eerste instantie naar Buchenwald in Duitsland gestuurd, waar het beruchte concentratiekamp op dat moment werd gebouwd.
