Gogol's epic tale, in the first new English translation in 40 years, recounts a bloody Cossack revolt against the Poles, led by the bold Taras Bulba of Ukrainian folk mythology, and the trials of his two sons, one of whom falls in love with a Polish girl and eventually is killed by his father in battle, the second of whom is executed before his father's anguished eyes.

Fie ca este un frizer ticait, cicalit de nevasta, pe care il loveste nenorocirea din pricina unui nas gasit in piine, sau un functionar a carui pasiune pentru litere e pe atit de mare, pe cit de mica-i este averea pe care si-o cheltuie pe-o manta, eroul povestirilor lui Gogol este in toate numai excese: simte enorm, vede monstruos si totul ii este peste poate. Veselia pe care o nasc intimplarile lui este, cum o spune chiar Gogol, rodul unor accese „inexplicabile chiar pentru mine insumi, care proveneau probabil chiar din starea mea bolnavicioasa. Roman Braća Karamazovi posljednji je roman Dostojevskoga, a prema mnogima i ponajbolji. Dva mjeseca pošto završava s pisanjem toga maestralnoga romana, pisac umire ostavivši djelo, kako naknadno saznajemo, nedovršeno (posljednje je stranice poslao uredništvu Ruskoga vjesnika 8. studenoga 1880., a preminuo je 28. siječnja 1881.). Naime, prema svjedočenju njegove supruge Ane Grigorjevne, Dostojevski je namjeravao napisati nastavak romana. Od posljednjih stranica prvoga romana trebalo je proći dvadeset godina, a radnja bi se zbivala u osamdesetim godinama devetnaestoga stoljeća. Aljoša Karamazov bio bi zreo čovjek koji je proživio dramu odnosa s Lizom Hohlakovom, a Mitja bi se vratio s robije. Prema svjedočenju A. S. Suvorina, Aljoša je trebao postati revolucionar koji bi počinio politički zločin.
