Příběh románu Osvobozená nevěsta (2001) se odehrává v 90. letech a soustřeďuje se na dvě různorodé komunity izraelské společnosti, jež se snaží žít navzájem v míru: na jedné straně na židovskou inteligenci, reprezentovanou hlavním hrdinou, profesorem orientalistiky Jochananem Rivlinem, ajeho ženou Chagit, okresní soudkyní, kteří žijí v Haifě, a na straně druhé na vzdělané Araby v galilejských vesnicích, jejichž život je svázán okupačními pravidly. Pod povrchem vyprávění jsou schována mnohá tajemství. Za láskyplným domácím škádlením Jochanana a Chagit se skrývá Jochananova snaha zjistit, co se pokazilo v krátkém manželství jejich syna, snaha hraničící až s posedlostí; a toto jeho pátrání komplikuje děsivé tajemství, které si znesvářený pár slíbil neprozradit.

Příběh se odehrává v roce 999, kdy se marocký židovský obchodník Ben Atar ožení s druhou manželkou. Tento krok, přirozený v prostředí východoafrické sefardské kultury, je zcela odmítnut jeho obchodním společníkem, synovcem žijícím v Paříži. A tak Ben Atar podnikne krok, jehož neočekávané důsledky zcela změní osud jeho rodiny, vztahy s ostatními lidmi, obchodní zájmy a celý život. Aby zabránil hrozícímu konfliktu, vezme na svou každoroční obchodní cestu do Evropy obě své ženy ve snaze přesvědčit aškenázské příbuzné svého společníka o přirozenosti a výhodách mnohoženství. K vlastnímu překvapení se jeho přesvědčení setkává pouze s nepochopením, a tak se tato cesta stává počátkem hlubokého lidského dramatu, na jehož počátku stojí konflikt věrnosti a touhy, překvapivě rezonující s podobnými dilematy objevujícími se i v dnešní době. Jehošua brilantně načrtává kulisu středověkého světa s jeho morálkou a sensualitou a uvnitř střetu dvou odlišných židovských kultur odkrývá nejhlubší otázky týkající se původu mravního cítění, charakteru, lidských stereotypů a jejich konfliktů s láskou a vášní.

Introspekce do Molchova navenek nenápadného a obyčejného, přesto čímsi bytostně bohatého a důvěrně blízkého vnitřního života nepostrádá situační humor a současně rozehrává základní drama lidské existence: co znamená ztratit svého nejbližšího a ocitnout se ve vakuu samoty.
