The Art That Remains
Collection International Biennial of Young Artists
This exhibition catalogue presents a long-overlooked set of artworks from the Slovak National Gallery collection as acquired from the legendary International Biennial of Young Artists Danuvius '68, Ľubor Kára's curatorial conception that took place in dramatic circumstances following the August occupation of Czechoslovakia. As an historically important exhibition from 1968, the Biennial is presented through art historical studies by Jana Geržová and Vladimíra Büngerová, contemporary documents, photographs from previously unpublished archives, and artworks by Slovak, Czech, and foreign artists (J. Jankovič, V. Popovič, A. Kučerová, M. Raysse, A. Biasi, M. Šutej, V. Veličković, and others). By rediscovering the long-forgotten, we strive to draw attention to our ambition (past and present) to collect and exhibit not only Slovak and Czechoslovak art but art from beyond our borders, and to focus on international cooperation in our role as an open, critical model of a gallery for the global age.
