The Disappearing Stage: Reflections on the 2011 Prague Quadrennial is a book of reflections on the recent 12th edition of the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. The authors include both domestic and foreign theorists and artists: Marvin Carlson (USA), Christopher Baugh (UK), Thea Brejzek (DE), Beth Weinstein (USA), Guy Gutman (IL) and Barbora Příhodová (CZ). The publication’s editor as well as author of last essay is American theatre theorist Arnold Aronson. The book’s essays look at various projects or aspects of the 2011 Prague Quadrennial, but many of which serve as a starting point for a deeper theoretical evaluation of contemporary theatre and scenography.

Kniha Arnolda Aronsona Looking into the Abyss (Pohled do propasti) je výborem esejů, přednášek, proslovů a článků předního amerického divadelního historika a teoretika, jehož prvotním předmětem zkoumání a zájmu je scénografie jako nedílná součást divadelní inscenace, její vizuality, která má stejnou důležitost jako slovo, pohyb herce, zvuk, hudba apod. Dalším důležitým aspektem je chápání divadla jako prostorového umění v čase a s interaktivní účastí diváka. Arnold Aronson, profesor divadelních studií na Columbia University, systematicky a čtivě mapuje vývoj amerického alternativního divadla. Vracejíc se k jeho kořenům, charakterizuje kulturní, společenský a umělecký kontext jeho vzniku a prostřednictvím kritických analýz seznamuje čtenáře s významnými osobnostmi, soubory a inscenacemi. Sleduje vnější podmínky rozvoje americké divadelní avantgardy i vlivy uměleckého vývoje, jako byly myšlenky Marcela Duchampa, Gertrude Steinové, Antonína Artauda a Johna Cage. Autor ilustruje zakořeňování těchto postupů na příkladech experimentů v Black Mountain College, happeningů Alana Kaprowa a díla Living Theatre. Dále připomíná kolektivní duch 60. let, vznik Open Theatre a přerod rituálního divadla do performancí, jako jsou Schechnerova Performance Group a Serbanovy experimenty v LaMaMa. Kniha zachycuje štěpení avantgardního hnutí v 70. a 80. letech, individualizaci performance, návrat k estetizaci v dílech Roberta Wilsona, Richarda Foremana a Wooster Group, a extrémní projevy "body art" na pomezí masochismu a sebepoškozování, včetně individuálních performancí zakotvených v autobiografické sféře performerů jako Spaulding Grey a Laurie Anderson.

Publikace nabízí reflexi uplynulého Pražského Quadriennale 2007 z pohledu zahraničních i českých teatrologů, divadelních kritiků i umělců. Kniha zároveň představuje analýzu různých aspektů a trendů současného divadelního designu a architektury.
