Blochova Feudální společnost představuje dnes již klasický pokus o postižení totálních dějin středověké společnosti. Na rozdíl od Králů divotvůrců zde autor předkládá syntetický výklad dějin západní Evropy od pozdní antiky po ranou renesanci. Důsledně přitom vychází z jím formulované a prosazované komparativní metody. Jeho komparativní pohled na středověké dějiny se však nesoustředí na vývoj v jednotlivých teritoriích, nýbrž naopak na sledování konkrétních jevů (lenní vztahy, obchod, intelektuální inovace, proměny zemědělství, rytířská kultura, zrození měšťanstva) v různých prostorových a časových souřadnicích, s důrazem na neustálou dynamiku středověkých dějinných procesů.

V Podivné porážce Marc Bloch nevystupuje jako historik, nýbrž jako kritický pozorovatel francouzského politického a intelektuálního selhání za druhé světové války. Jeho kniha je tvrdou, přitom však trefnou obžalobou nejen kolaborace obyčejných Francouzů, ale i anatomickým rozborem jejich falešných předválečných iluzí. Podivná porážka však rovněž reprezentuje téměř heroický postoj univerzitního profesora, který na vrcholu své vědecké slávy neváhal obětovat vlastní kariéru a v konečném důsledku i život za vlast, kterou miloval. Ačkoli byl přesvědčen, že si „podivnou porážku“ Francouzi přivodili především sami, bez váhání se aktivně zapojil do odboje. Ani ve válečné vřavě však neztratil schopnost analyzovat současnost stejně kriticky a stejně prozíravě jako středověké prameny, čímž sám na sobě demonstroval, jak je myšlení o dějinách vždy bytostně provázáno s historikovou současností.

Bronislaw Geremek Die zweiundvierzig Briefe Marc Blochs, die bisher noch nicht herausgegeben wurden und in diesem Band versammelt sind, zeichnen die Entstehung der 'Feudalgesellschaft' aus der Sicht des Herausgebers nach. Ihre beiden Bände erschienen während des 'Sitzkriegs' in der berühmten Reihe 'L´évolution de l´humanité' im Verlag Albin Michel, während ihr Autor als Soldat im Felde stand. Diese Briefe, die er von 1935 bis 1943 an Henri Berr, den Herausgeber der Reihe und Gründer der Revue de Synthèse, richtete, bieten ein beispiellos lebhaftes Bild vom 'Metier des Historikers', wie es Marc Bloch verstand. Sie zeigen, wie ein Hauptwerk der zeitgenössischen Geschichtsschreibung geboren wurde, und zwar nicht auf ein geplantes Kommando hin, sondern nach einer Reihe von Umständen, in denen auch der Zufall seine Rolle spielte. Dieser Briefwechsel wurde aus dem schriftlichen Nachlaß Henri Berrs erstellt, der im Institut Mémoires de l´édition contemporaine aufbewahrt wird.

Marc Bloch (1886 -1944) war einer der bedeutendsten Historiker des 20. Jahrhunderts. Gemeinsam mit Lucien Febvre gründete er 1929 die berühmte Zeitschrift Annales.

Marc Bloch (1886-1944), seit 1921 Professor für mittelalterliche Geschichte an der Universität Straßburg, seit 1937 Professor für Wirtschaftsgeschichte an der Sorbonne, gilt als Wegbereiter der modernen Mentalitäts- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte. 1929 gründete er gemeinsam mit Lucien Febvre die Zeitschrift Annales, mit deren Namen bis heute die Ausweitung der Geschichtswissenschaft zur historischen Anthropologie verbunden wird. 1943 schloß sich Marc Bloch der Résistance an. Nach monatelanger Folter wurde er am 16. Juli 1944 von der Gestapo bei Lyon erschossen.
