Nach dem Tod seiner zweiten Frau und zunehmender Isolation kehrte er Großbritannien den Rücken und ließ sich in Los Angeles nieder, wo er nicht an frühere Erfolge anknüpfen konnte. 2007 nahm er sich das Leben und hinterließ ein einzigartiges Manuskript, das nun veröffentlicht wird. Es gilt als literarische und kunsthistorische Sensation.
