Magical Child, a classic work, profoundly questioned the current thinking on childbirth pratices, parenting, and educating our children. Now its daring ideas about how Western society is damaging our children, and how we can better nurture them and ourselves, ring truer than ever. From the very instant of birth, says Joseph Chilton Pearce, the human child has only one concern: to learn all that there is to learn about the world. This planet is the child's playground, and nothing should interfere with a child's play. Raised this way, the Magical Child is a happy genius, capable of anything, equipped to fulfill his amazing potential. Expanding on the ideas of internationally acclaimed child psychologist Jean Piaget, Pearce traces the growth of the mind-brain from birth to adulthood. He connects the alarming rise in autism, hyperkinetic behavior, childhood schizophrenia, and adolescent suicide to the all too common errors we make in raising and educating our children. Then he shows how we can restore the astonishing wealth of creative intelligence that is the birthright of every human being. Pearce challenged all our notions about child rearing, and in the process challenges us to re-examine ourselves. Pearce's message is simple: it is never too late to play, for we are all Magical Children.

An Appetite for Wonder

With the 2006 publication of The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins became synonymous with fierce skepticism and articulate debate. His first memoir offers a personal glimpse into his early life and intellectual journey. Dawkins' first book, The Selfish Gene, revolutionized biology with its gene-centered view of evolution and introduced the term "meme," which has since permeated contemporary culture. In this memoir, he reflects on his idyllic childhood in colonial Africa, sharing anecdotes about his colorful ancestors and the quirks of post-World War II colonial life. At boarding school, a pivotal moment occurred when he refused to kneel for prayer, marking the beginning of his skepticism. Although he experienced some inspiring teaching, it was at Oxford in 1959 that his intellectual curiosity truly flourished. There, he encountered legendary mentors and the unique tutorial system that encouraged rigorous questioning and independent research. His career at Oxford took an unexpected turn during a 1973 electricity strike, prompting him to write what he humorously referred to as "my bestseller," which became The Selfish Gene. This memoir reveals the childhood and intellectual development of the renowned evolutionary biologist and atheist, detailing the journey to creating one of the twentieth century's most significant works.

Neurosis and Human Growth
The struggle toward self-realization
One of the most original psychoanalysts after Freud, Karen Horney introduced concepts such as alienation, self-realization, and the idealized image, emphasizing the role of culture and environment in psychoanalysis. Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1885, she earned her medical degree from the University of Berlin in 1913. Horney studied psychiatry at Berlin-Lankwitz from 1914 to 1918 and taught at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute until 1932. She participated in significant international congresses, including a discussion on lay analysis chaired by Freud. In 1932, she moved to the United States and served as Associate Director of the Psychoanalytic Institute in Chicago for two years. In 1934, she joined the teaching staff of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and later co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and the American Institute for Psychoanalysis in 1941. In her work, Horney examines the neurotic process as a deviation from healthy growth, detailing stages of neurotic claims, inner dictates, and the solutions individuals adopt to manage conflict through emotional attitudes like domination or dependency. Her insights reveal the forces that influence personal potential. This 40th Anniversary Edition features a new preface by Stephanie Steinfeld, Ph.D., and Jeffrey Rubin, M.D.
