Autor se v knize zabývá přehledným vymezením pojmů koncilu i pojmů souvisejících, načež postupně v šesti kapitolách vyloží klíčové okamžiky koncilů v průběhu celých církevních dějin. Zabývá se zvláště osmi ekumenickými koncily starověku, papežskými generálními koncily pozdního středověku, věnuje se zásadní otázce, zda stojí koncil nad papežem, poté přejde k tridentskému a prvnímu a druhému vatikánskému koncilu.
