Eddie’s criminal career began at nine years old. Between the ages of fourteen and twenty–nine he spent eleven years behind bars with convictions for assault, theft and robbery. The phrase ‘miss–spent youth’ doesn’t do Eddie justice. The final straw came during one prison term when an officer waited until Christmas Day to read him a letter from his wife, a letter telling him she was leaving him. Feeling as though he had nothing left in life Eddie reacted in the only way he knew how – violently. Not long after Eddie received a visit from a Christian minister. His message of new beginnings and forgiveness for past sins awoke something in him. Eddie realised that his old life was going no where, he needed a new direction so he trusted and believed the good news of Jesus Christ. From that moment on his life has never been the same. The change in Eddie’s life has been so profound as to challenge the cynics who scoff at ‘jailhouse conversions’. There is something more here than a guilty person caught in the act having a fit of conscience. Today Eddie reaches out to others through a ministry to the homeless, a testimony to the power of God to renew the whole person. Anne Sutherland’s inspiring biography reminds us all that whatever our situation in life, we have a God who welcomes home the prodigal.

The Gypsies portrayed in this book are the Vlax-speaking Rom, the largest group of Gypsies in the United States, numbering 500,000. Not officially recognized as a minority in the U.S. until 1972, Gypsies have led an almost entirely invisible existence here. Now in this fascinating work--the first complete account of American Gypsies--Sutherland has produced an in-depth look at the full range of everyday social life among the Rom. Separate, elusive, complex, and unique among the people of the world, Gypsies have preserved their traditional way of life. How have they avoided assimilation? What keeps them apart? How are they organized, and what do they believe? These and other important questions about these hidden Americans are addressed in Sutherland's contemporary study.

Challenging the notion that globalization creates clear winners and losers, this book argues that the margins of the global system can foster significant cultural creativity. It explores how local relations and identities flourish within a transnational political economy, despite challenges from powerful global movements like environmentalism and the drug trade. The paradox of instant global communication is highlighted, revealing how it enhances local identities that are rich in multicultural influences.

Challenging the notion that globalization will create clear winners and losers, this book explores how marginalized areas can foster vibrant cultural activity through local relations and identities in a transnational context. It highlights the complexities faced by these regions, influenced by powerful transnational movements like environmentalism and migration. Interestingly, the instant connectivity of the global world has paradoxically strengthened local identities, leading to a rich tapestry of multiculturalism that transcends traditional boundaries.
