Un voyage impromptu avec une connaissance du lycée a suscité l'idée de son livre, une expérience qu'il a estimée particulièrement propice à l'exploration littéraire. Il a également conçu le livre comme un moyen d'offrir une base spirituelle qu'il ne pouvait pas fournir à sa fille, s'étant éloigné de la religion dès son jeune âge.
