Sommer 1914. In einem mittelböhmischen Schloss treffen zwei prominente Autoren aufeinander: Rainer Maria Rilke und Karl Kraus. Zwischen den beiden besteht eine komplexe Beziehung aus Respekt und Missgunst, verstärkt durch die Anwesenheit von Sidonie von Nádherný. Sie ist gebildet, schön und strebt nach Emanzipation, kann jedoch ihre gesellschaftlichen Wurzeln nicht ganz ablegen. Beide Literaten werben um ihre Gunst, wobei Kraus ihr heimlicher Geliebter ist, der sie heiraten möchte. Rilke warnt Sidonie eindringlich vor einer Ehe mit einem Juden, was sie dazu bringt, Kraus abzulehnen. Der Erste Weltkrieg bricht aus, von Rilke bejubelt und von Kraus abgelehnt. Kraus verfasst sein Werk "Die letzten Tage der Menschheit", unterstützt von Sidonie. Trotz ihrer Beziehung zu Kraus hält Sidonie die Verbindung zu Rilke aufrecht. Ihre Verlobung mit dem italienischen Aristokraten Guicciardini bricht sie zu Kriegsbeginn ab, und ihre spätere Ehe mit dem Arzt Max Thun scheitert. Nach dem Tod von Rilke und Kraus wird es einsam um sie. Sidonie widmet sich der Pflege ihres Parkgartens und den Nachlässen der beiden Dichter, bevor der Zweite Weltkrieg und die kommunistische Machtübernahme ihre Welt grundlegend verändern.
